with
deeply-cut dark green leaves and perfect tightly double pure white
flowers.

Ranunculus constantinopolitanus ‘Plenus’
Cultivated since the 18th Century, a non-invasive buttercup with
handsome leaves and
gorgeous glossy double yellow flowers with a green centre.
Moisture, sun or shade. Early summer. 18” £3.80
Rosa ‘Blush Noisette’ ( R. Noisette
Carnée )
If I could only have one climbing Rose, this would be it. Continuously
produced large clusters
of semi-double lilac-pink flowers with a rich clove scent. Still
in flower as I write in December.
A shortish climber with few thorns and dark green foliage or will
make a large shrub. 2-litre pots.
*Sun or light shade. All summer. 10-16ft. £6.50
Rosa bracteata
Cistus-like lustrous pure white flowers with bright orange-yellow
stamens on sturdy stems covered
with stout hooked thorns. Glossy evergreen leaves. Rather tender,
requiring a warm wall even
in Cornwall but worth trying as it flowers continuously from June
‘till autumn. 2-litre pots.
*Sun, good soil. Summer onwards. Up to 15ft. £6.80
Rosa chinensis ‘Bengal Beauty’
All year round flowering from this china rose of unknown origin.
Large loose cherry
red flowers are produced in quick succession on a twiggy bush
up to 4ft. high. Can be
used as a short bush or grown in a large pot and tied to a tripod
or some other support.
A few only in 2-litre pots.
*Sun or light shade. All year. 4ft. £6.80
Rosa ‘Dusky Maiden’
Most asked-about Rose in my garden. A Floribunda raised by Le
Grice in 1947,
with dusky velvet-red single blooms for much of the summer. Good
scent.
*Sun or light shade. 2-litre pots. All summer. 3-4ft. £6.50
Roscoea cautleyoides
Clear pale yellow orchid-like flowers and tall narrow leaves.
Late up but
always creates interest. 2-litre pots.
Part or full shade, peaty soil, not too dry. Late summer. 18”
£4.50
Roscoea purpurea
Unusual member of the Ginger family with erect, sword-like leaves
from which emerge
hooded orchid-like deep purple flowers. Slow to appear in late
spring. Seed grown so
may be slight variations in flower colour. Flowering-sized plants
in 2-litre pots.
Sun or part shade, good moist but not boggy soil. Late summer.
